Scarves Make a Comeback

Don’t let mom hit Goodwill just yet.  You might find one of this year’s hottest trends hidden deep in your mother’s fashion rejects drawer. The oversized silk scarf is back.

Scarves are reminiscent of the fashion glamour of the 50’s, rekindling memories of Grace Kelly and Jackie Kennedy with scarves tied gracefully around their heads as they drove around in stunning convertibles. The artful décor and glitzy twist that a fabulous scarf can add to your repertoire is undeniable.

Scarves are everywhere in 2008. Think light, airy, flowing pieces that can be tied like it’s winter or in any direction that inspires you. Many fashonistas have been draping both ends of the scarf around their necks. It doesn’t have to perfect. That’s the whole point. It’s a way to add a piece of your personality to your outfit. After all isn’t fashion just that, an avenue for self expression.

Wear scarves through the day and into the night. Celebrities are sporting them with everything from formal dresses to workout gear. To avoid a fashion mishap, try not to have too much going on with your scarf if your outfit is a loud fabric as well. Clashing is not acceptable.

Scarves are the most versatile fashion accessories in my closet. Whether it be a bad hair day, rainy day, chilly or just brightening up your boring ensemble, scarves are a great addition.

When shopping for scarves, as in life, you get what you pay for in terms of craftsmanship, quality, fabric and spectacular patterns. Chanel and Hermes are the classic scarf designers. If you’re lucky you might even run into a vintage Hermes and Chanel piece, but expect to pay for it. Bluefly.com and Shopbop.com also have a good selection. It really depends on how much you’re looking to spend.

Me, I’ll be hitting up my mom’s accessory drawer to see if I can strike gold. Who knew that those flamboyant scarves that my mother paid so much for years ago would turn out to be so valuable today? Thank goodness that fashion is cyclical.
